The Wheelchair Fencing World Championships in October 2011 were hosted alongside the able-bodied World Championships in Catania, Sicily. A large entry of 157 wheelchair fencers from 27 different nations entered the competition and overall, Team GB’s results show a general improvement in performances.
The best results included two last-16 places, three last-32 places and improved Team Event scores, and the squad developed a fantastic team spirit over the course of the eight days spent in Italy.
It is unlikely however that GB’s wheelchair fencers will win any medals at London 2012. The Performance Programme is starting to take shape for 2016 though, through a group of talented, committed fencers who are still relatively new to wheelchair fencing, and progression is being made in securing a full team of sports science support staff (albeit part-time).
Last-16:
Tom Hall-Butcher (Men’s Sabre)
Justine Moore (Women’s Epee)
Last-32:
Simon Wilson (Men’s Foil)
Craig McCann (Men’s Epee)
Vivien Mills (Women’s Epee)
