As we enter into the Olympic Qualification period, Sabreur Sophie Williams notched up a great personal achievement at the World Cup event in Bologna, coming 41st and securing the top GB result in the competition.
Highlights for Sophie included a strong win against world top 30 fencer, Carole Vergne of France, as well as victories against other experience fencers such as Shin Hui Choi (KOR) and Veronika Danilova (RUS).
She said “This was a good start to the Olympic qualifying season for me; I definitely feel that I can take a lot of positives to the next Grand Prix in Tianjin and hopefully keep improving my results. The confidence gained by beating some top fencers at this event will stand me in good stead for the remainder of the season.”
Coach Jon Salfield said “Sophie showed maturity beyond her years in this first OG qualifier, which was the largest Women’s Sabre World Cup in the history of the sport. She has just finished her junior career ranked 11th in the world and has already made a strong transition to senior level. We have a few adjustments to make to some attacking actions between now and the Tianjin GP, and then we’ll be ready to go for even better results over the coming season.”
