Chrystall Nicoll competed in the Orleans Grand Prix at the weekend, and finished a respectable 25th after two days of promising fencing.
After qualifying strongly from her poule, Nicoll beat Nakayama of Japan to make it into the last 32, where she faced world number 1 and double Olympic champion, Mariel Zagunis of the USA.
Nicoll executed her game plan well, kept tight on Zagunis and was narrowly down 8/6 at the break, maintaining the pressure to 10/11. Zagunis pulled away at the end though to win 15/11, and knock Nicoll out of the competition.
Zagunis went on to win the Grand Prix, winning the final comfortably, 15/4.
Nicoll said, “Whilst finishing 25th is not what I had targeted for this event, my world ranking has moved up 3 places after this result to 22nd in the world, which is a step in the right direction. I’m targeting a top 8 finish at the England trophy in Crystal Palace at the end of the month, and I look forward to fencing in front of a home crowd.”
