In preparation for the beginning of the Olympic qualifying period the Men’s Foil squad spent much of last week training in Salsburg with the Austrian team amongst others. After a hard few days the Austrian hosts held a team tournament which included two home teams, three British teams, the first teams from Israel and Ukraine and teams from Moldova and Croatia.
The British teams took the event by storm taking all three podium places. GBR 3 (Fitzgerald, Rosowsky and Peggs) eliminated the top Austrian team 45-38 and then surpassed all expectations by knocking out the Ukranians 45-36. GBR 2 (Kenber, Davis and Mepstead) made light work of Israel 45-34 and then beat the Ukranians 45-35 in the bronze medal fight.
GBR 3 met GBR 1 (Kruse, Halstead and Jeffries) in the fight for first place and were beaten 45-30. Head Coach, Ziemek Wojciechowski, was delighted with the results and after the event said, “This was a pleasing result clearly showing the strength in depth of our squad.” As the team head off to the first Men’s Foil Olympic qualifier, Wojciechowski added, “I think the boys are ready for the Far East tour.”
