Beazley's first pop up fencing event held in the heart of the City at Leadenhall Market last night, played host to a first class display of fencing and demonstrated City workers' enthusiasm for having a go at the sport.

Six of Great Britain's top fencers and Olympic hopefuls entertained the evening crowd with a dazzling showcase of speed and agility, with 5 live's Lynsey Hipgrave and British Foilist Laurence Halsted co-hosting and commentating on the action.

The demonstration gave the audience a chance to experience fencing firsthand, to understand the rules of the sport and see that fencing is easy and interesting to follow. Twelve members of the audience felt that they had learned enough from the demos and stepped up to have a go at fencing themselves, in a series of short public competitions.

Ian Hoy, Head of Sponsorship at Beazley said: “The event was a resounding success and I am very pleased that we were able to put this event on and help to raise awareness of fencing and the fantastic athletes who represent Great Britain. We are proud of our 5 year sponsorship of British Fencing and are excited about seeing the athletes’ progress into 2012 and beyond. We will be holding similar pop up events at various prominent locations in the build up to the Olympics.”

Taking part in the event were the following athletes: Chyrstall Nicoll, Helen Fairhead, Ed Jefferies, Ben Peggs, Tom Bennett and James Thornton, demonstrating the three fencing disciplines of Sabre, Foil and Epee.
