Coaching Award Win

Newcastle University Director of Fencing, Iain Aberdeen, picks up Sport Newcastle’s Stan Calvert Award for Coaching.  Iain has won this Award for his wide ranging coaching portfolio, ranging from coaching in a number of schools to working with the England and Great Britain Squad fencers.  He has coached numerous age groups to national standard level and he currently coaches the Great Britain number one women’s epee fencer and National Women’s Wheelchair Fencing Champion, Olwyn Fitzgerald.
 
Other notable winners were current Newcastle United Captain Kevin Nolan, former world champion boxer-turned pundit and coach Glenn McCrory, who carried off the Wilkinson Sword, Frank Brennan Trophy winners Whitley Bay FC, and Newcastle Diamonds speedway team, who landed the Team Community Award and Sir John Hall who was awarded a lifetime achievement award.
 
Iain said “to be introduced as a north east sporting celebrity alongside the other award winners was fantastic. It shows how the sport is gaining recognition in the local area through the projects Newcastle University and Newcastle Fencing club are delivering.”
 
This award comes at an exciting time where the Newcastle Fencing Club and have been recognised nationally with the awards of InspireMark 2012.
