Épée Exposé

26th January 2012

26th January 2012
With just one male epeeist (Phillip Marsh) and one female epeeist (Corinna Lawrence) on the World Class Programme, the focus for this weapon is much narrower than for foil and sabre. However, the quality is there for all to see. Phillip is the 2011 Junior World Champion and Corinna was the only British fencer to reach the top 16 at the Senior World Championships last year.
Phillip will be joined by a number of GB men’s epeeists (TBC) and they will continue their pursuit of Olympic qualification in Legano on the last weekend of January, whilst the women will have to wait until the second week in February before taking to the piste in Doha.
As for the other weapons there are only four more events to gain the points necessary for automatic qualification – three World Cups and one Grand Prix.  Regardless of whether a GB fencer makes the automatic spots, the Performance Team will select one male and one female fencer to compete at the European Zonal Qualifier in Slovakia in April.
Phillip is yet to complete a full season at Senior level and as such does not have an international ranking. However he is ranked 3rd in the World at Junior level.  2012 qualification is a big ask for this young man who is still at school but he is a great prospect for 2016 and beyond. Corinna is the highest internationally ranked British epeeist at number 50 in the World and she will be looking to climb into the World’s top 16 before the end of March to maximise her chances of fencing in London in the summer.
The qualification events are:-

1.     27-29 January:  Legano World Cup
2.     10-11 February:  Doha Grand Prix
3.     2-4 March:  Tallin World Cup
